For thousands of years, pearls have been worn as jewellery and regarded as a symbol of elegance. Yet what makes a pearl truly remarkable has little to do with rarity or shine alone. Unlike most gemstones, which are mined from the earth, a pearl is formed by a living creature. So what exactly is a pearl, how does it form, and why can its appearance vary so widely? Let's start from the beginning.
What Is a Pearl?
A pearl is a gemological material formed inside the body, or within the shell, of certain molluscs — a group that includes several species of oyster, clam, mussel and sea snail. Because it is produced by a living organism, a pearl is classified as an organic gem, unlike diamonds, sapphires or emeralds, which form through geological processes underground.
Most pearls consist primarily of calcium carbonate, bound together with a small amount of organic material called conchiolin. The mollusc arranges these elements into a microscopic layered structure, and it is this structure — rather than any external polishing — that determines whether a pearl's surface appears deeply lustrous, soft like porcelain, or shifts gently in colour as light moves across it.
Not every mollusc capable of producing a pearl will actually produce one worth using in jewellery. Even among species known for gem-quality pearls, the results are not always round, smooth, or attractive enough to be considered fine jewellery material.
How Pearls Are Formed
Pearl formation begins when the shell-building tissue of a mollusc is disturbed. The trigger can be a microscopic organism, an injury, or biological material that becomes lodged within the tissue. The popular idea that pearls always begin with a grain of sand is something of a simplification — sand is not the only cause, and rarely the most common one. In simple terms, the process can be understood in four stages:
- The mollusc's tissue is disturbed. Certain cells within the mantle tissue shift, or become trapped, elsewhere in the mollusc's body.
- A pearl sac forms. These displaced cells organise themselves into a small structure known as a pearl sac.
- Pearl material begins to accumulate. The pearl sac gradually secretes calcium carbonate together with organic material.
- Layers build up over time. This ongoing deposition produces a pearl with its own distinct size, shape, colour and surface character.
The mollusc remains active throughout this entire process. A person can initiate the process in a cultured pearl, but the pearl material itself is always built by the living organism.
Natural, Cultured and Imitation Pearls: What Is the Difference?
The key difference between a natural and a cultured pearl lies in how the process begins — not in whether the pearl is "real" or "fake." In many saltwater cultured pearls, a technician inserts a round nucleus together with a small piece of mantle tissue. In many freshwater cultured pearls, the process can begin mainly with mantle tissue alone, without a round nucleus. The technique used depends on the mollusc species and the type of pearl being cultivated.
The most important point to remember is this: a cultured pearl is still a genuine pearl, because its pearl layers are built entirely by the mollusc. This sets it apart from an imitation pearl, which is typically made from glass, plastic or another material coated to resemble a pearl's surface. Natural or cultured origin cannot always be confirmed by appearance alone — for high-value pieces, laboratory examination, including internal structure imaging, may be required.

What Is Nacre and Why Does It Matter?
Nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl, is the layered material that lines the inside of the shell in many mollusc species. In nacreous pearls, this same material is arranged in many extremely thin layers. When light interacts with the surface and these layers, it produces the glow known as lustre. In some pearls, this interaction also creates a soft play of colour known as orient. A pearl's beauty, then, is not simply the result of a polished surface — it is closely tied to a structure the mollusc itself has built.
The thickness, continuity and arrangement of nacre can affect both a pearl's appearance and its durability. However, not every pearl has this classic nacre structure.
Nacreous and Non-Nacreous Pearls
Broadly speaking, pearls can be discussed as belonging to two structural groups.
Nacreous Pearls
These pearls have a layered nacre structure that produces their characteristic glow. Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian and most freshwater pearls fall into this group. Their appearance can range from a soft glow to a sharp, mirror-like reflection, depending on surface quality and nacre arrangement.
Non-Nacreous Pearls
Non-nacreous pearls do not have the layered nacre structure typical of most pearls. That does not make them any less beautiful. Some display a smooth, porcelain-like surface, while others show a fibrous pattern that resembles flickering flames, known as flame structure.
The best-known examples are conch pearls, which form within the queen conch sea snail, and Melo pearls, which come from sea snails of the genus Melo. Both are rare and can display strikingly distinctive colours — ranging from soft pink in conch pearls to warm orange in Melo pearls.
Are All Pearls Round and White?
Not at all. Round, white pearls may be the most familiar image, but nature offers far greater variety. Pearls can be round, near-round, oval, drop, button, circled, or baroque, with irregular silhouettes of their own. Their colour can range through white, cream, silver, gold, grey, green, pink, peach and lavender, as well as combinations of several tones.
The mollusc species, growing conditions, layer structure and the way light falls across the surface can all influence a pearl's final appearance. Because each pearl grows through a biological process, even two pearls that look similar at first glance can carry different surface details and lustre character.
What Determines the Quality of a Pearl?
Understanding a pearl's origin and structure is only the first step. To describe visual quality, GIA (the Gemological Institute of America) uses seven factors: size, shape, colour, lustre, surface condition, nacre quality, and — for pieces using more than one pearl — matching.
No single factor stands alone. A large pearl is not necessarily more appealing if its lustre is poor, while an asymmetrical baroque pearl can still be highly valued for its colour, lustre, rarity or individual character.
